When an unknown entity begins killing off the world’s population, there is only thing for certain: if you see it, you die.

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, “Bird Box” centers around Malerie (Sandra Bullock) and her two children—named Boy (Julian Edwards) and Girl (Vivien Lyra Blair)—must embark on a journey through the woods and down a river, seeking a safe place for them on the other side.  Malorie will do whatever is takes to keep her children safe while avoiding the mysterious force that can take the form of their worst fear.

“Bird Box” has been interpreted to be a commentary on mental health. Those who were not affected by the unknown entity were labeled “mentally ill” and wanted everyone else to see what they were seeing all along.

Although this sci-fi thriller is known for giving some viewers the “creeps”, others loved the suspense and drama. Overall, “Bird Box” is intriguing, but slightly gruesome with some graphically violent scenes.

Sandra Bullock, however, plays a riveting role as drill-sergeant mom who is basically disconnected from emotion.

While “Bird Box” wasn’t a jump-scare movie, it is certainly a dark and ominous film with an ironic twist at the end.

Horror and suspense are not for everyone, but “Bird Box” seems to be reaching a vast and varied audience. The Netflix original, if put in theaters, would have have currently grossed an estimated $450 million in the first week.

Due to its success with movies like “Bird Box”, television series and documentaries, Netflix recently increased the monthly subscription rate on their most popular package from $11 to $13. Although there is in increase in price, customers are continuing to pay for movies like “Bird Box”.

Anyone who loves sci-fi thrillers with a gruesome twist would wholeheartedly enjoy “Bird Box”.
