Viewers succumb to Netflix-binges

Many people, young and old, are falling victim to the distraction Netflix has to offer, and why wouldn’t they?

Here’s a common scenario: a viewer sits down to watch to watch a show, movie or documentary on Netflix then, somehow, four hours elapse in what feels like an instant.

That’s called binge watching.

According to NBC News, a Netflix survey found that 61 percent of users regularly watch between two or six episodes of a show in one sitting.

PA’s Dean of Students, Ms. Parkinson admits she will pick shows based off recommendations from friends and binge.

“About 20 minutes in, I can tell whether or not I will finish a series,” said Ms. Parkinson.

Ms. Parkinson says the most annoying part about Netflix is when the message flashes on the scene asking if you are still watching. Most times, she said that she is multitasking while watching Netflix.

Consistent with the survey, Ms. Parkinson will watch about five episodes in a row.

Junior Melanie MacNally, says it is all-too easy to become addicted to a show.

“When I binge watch Netflix and get into the zone, it’s like a trance,” MacNally said. “It’s so easy to find an interesting show, and become obsessed with it.”

MacNally attributed the fact that Netflix has no commercials and “such a wide variety of genres” to her binges.
