H.E.R.O Club educates PA

Emmett Duquette, Staff

Helping Educate Regarding Orientation (H.E.R.O.) Club is a safe place at PA for students and staff to be themselves, whether they are part of the LGBTQ community or not.

The club, formerly the Gay-Straight Alliance, meets where they plan events, discuss topics involving tolerance and LGBTQ+ community and share snacks.

Club president senior Madison McCormack said “everyone is welcome” regardless of sexual orientation or gender-identity.

Math teacher Mrs. Helfrich has been advising the H.E.R.O. for four years and helps plan events and faciliate discussions.

“She is one of the most caring teachers someone could ever have,” said junior Melanie MacNally, a club member.

The H.E.R.O. Club has previously planned to Boston Pride parade in 2016 and movie nights in school library, where films such “Love, Simon” are viewed.

In September, club members also made posters with handprints to represent members’ sexual orientation and gender-identity.

Topics for discussion recently included the addition of LGBTQ+ sex education classes in PA’s Wellness curriculum.

The H.E.R.O. Clubs meets on Tuesday in Rm. 2003 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
