“Anyone But You,” a romantic-comedy directed by Will Gluck, released in theaters on Dec. 22., was easily the best rom-com of 2023 and, if I were to look into a crystal ball, possibly 2024.
The movie begins with a random hook-up between the main characters Ben (Glen Powell) and Bea (Sydney Sweeny). However, when the morning after doesn’t go as planned, the two start to hate each other. This hatred is made interesting when the characters find themselves attending the same wedding.
“Anyone but You” does the old enemies-to-lovers trope extremely well. After the next morning regrets, the tension between the couple when they reunite is palpable. To compound problems, there are not enough rooms in the house where they’re staying for the wedding, so Bea and Ben have to share one. The animosity between characters, as well as the chemistry between actors, makes for a fun watch.
The background characters, however, are simple and, at times, bland. These characters could have been more developed, even if just in small scenes. While the film’s focus is Bea and Ben—who are great—the background characters have no personalities, and the wedding they are attending feels like ambient noise in the film.
Additionally, following the film’s release in theaters, its soundtrack took off and went viral. While on the plane to the wedding, Ben listens to his “serenity song,” which is “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. After the movie came out, it became a trend to make TikTok videos while leaving the theater with “Unwritten” playing in the background.
“Anyone But You” is funny, romantic, interesting, and simply a good watch. Currently, the film is still in theaters, but it can also be streamed at home on select streaming services. I fully recommend watching it.
