The C’s lack of depth could come back to bite

The Celtics tipped off their 2023-24 season Wednesday night with a 108-104 victory over the Knicks, beginning a season chock full of high expectations for Green Teamers.

In the off-season, the Celtics sent away and brought in numerous stars through trades, which had some of the fans worried.

Last year, the whole league was talking about how stacked the Celtics were in terms of depth. Every position had multiple players who could start for other teams but were bench-players on Boston.

Sadly, despite all of that depth, they had still lost in the Eastern Conference Finals last season to the Miami Heat.

This past offseason, general manager Brad Stevens, who used to be the head coach for the Celtics, was very busy. The Celtics traded 10 players from last year’s team, including center Rob Williams and forward Grant Williams, as well as guards Malcolm Brogden and fan-favorite and “Defensive Player of the Year” Marcus Smart.

In exchange, Stevens acquired superstars like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. With these trades, the Celtics starting lineup has gotten better, but they lost the bench depth.

This starting lineup, however, has made the Celtics one of the true powerhouses of the NBA, which is needed in order to beat the Bucks, who acquired superstar Damian LIllard to play alongside superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

While I believe that Stevens was successful in the off-season, my biggest concern is that injuries—and Porzingis is injury prone— can ruin this season in a heartbeat, due to the lack of depth on the bench.
