5 Christmas songs to brighten the holidays

Madison Hamel, Staff

When you go into the stores during the Christmas season,  you more than likely hear Christmas music piping from the ceiling. It’s basically everywhere at this time of year. Some songs are actually good, and then there are others that are not so good.  I’m not a professional musician, but I believe that  I have a decent taste in music.

So these are my top five Christmas songs and why I like them.

  1. “Snowman” Sia.

This song is not what I would usually like, but something about her voice makes me like the song. The lyrics are interesting, but they don’t make much logical sense. Still, it reminds me of how I used to feel whenever I would work really hard on a snowman when I was younger.

  1. “Linus and Lucy” Vince Guaraldi Trio

While this song is  boring,  I really like it. It’s definitely a classic. I really like “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” so maybe that’s why I like the song so much. I really enjoy the beat, and the fact that it is strictly instrumental is relaxing to me.

  1. “Jingle Bell Rock” Bobby Helms

To be completely honest, I really like this song because it reminds me of the movie “Mean Girls”. Whenever I hear it, I  think of Gretchen kicking their radio into Jason’s face, and it makes me laugh. But the song also has a nice beat and I enjoy the string instruments in the background. I really like the chorus as well.

  1. “White Christmas” The Drifters

I  love this version of the song, I love the way it’s sung and the harmonizing in the background is really nice. At 1:08  into the song, when the high pitched voice starts singing,  the vibe changes, but I still really enjoy the tune. I also  enjoy doo-wop music.

  1. “Last Christmas” Wham!

This is by far my absolute favorite Christmas song. I listen to this song all year. This is the only song I can listen to on repeat and not get tired of it. I love the instrumentals , and the singing is great.  I really like 80s music, so it’s  not surprising that I love this song. I know the lyrics by heart and have it in my Spotify playlist. Whenever this song comes on the radio, I turn it all the way up.

[Editor’s note: As advisor to The Spartans Speak, in no way, do I endorse the inclusion of Wham’s veritable stink-bomb of a Christmas song on this list. NG]
