‘Smile’ succeeds in scaring

“Smile,” a new psychological horror movie,  was released in theaters on Sept. 30 to mixed reviews. Directed by Parker Finn, the film follows Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) as she attempts to overcome the “Smile Curse” that passes through traumatic events, like a chain reaction.

Gore-lovers will definitely enjoy “Smile”. The Smile Curse causes many of its victims to turn suicidal, and blood and gore ensues. However, the movie could trigger some viewers with scenes of  suicide and self-mutilation.

Bacon is amazing as Dr. Cotter, and the supporting cast doesn’t disappoint.  Viewers watch as the curse affects the minds of its victims, and their sense of reality deteriorates. The curse doesn’t just affect Dr. Cotter, it also affects her relationships and her job.

And while some parts of the movie feel  slow, most of the time it is set at a good pace. Some parts are also a bit hard to follow and can go over viewers’ heads if they’re not giving the film their full attention.

There are also some scenes towards the end where the CGI is lackluster, but overall the sound editing and mixing were really good and the movie was quite enjoyable. “Smile” is currently playing in the Regal Theaters in Hooksett and Concord.
